The Utah Division of Wildlife could put restrictions on whether hunters can use bait to lure big game into their sights.

Most western states forbid hunters from using bait to attract deer or elk, but DWR officials say the practice in Utah has become more popular, particularly among bowhunters.

However, state biologists warn the practice could lead to the spread of chronic wasting disease among the animals, as the virus is spread by saliva and nose-to-nose contact.

A survey of hunters conducted by DWR found that 43-percent of hunters want the practice to be banned.
