Utahns will pay less in income taxes in the new year but will also face new taxes on groceries and some services.

State Senator Todd Weiler was one of the 20 Senate members who voted in favor of a statewide tax overhaul package yesterday.

The bill will go into effect 60 days after it is signed by Governor Herbert.

The bill amounts to a 160-million-dollar tax cut for Utahns due to a drop in the income tax rate.

But Utahns will now pay more sales taxes on food, for services such as rideshares and pet grooming, and for some types of fuel.

State Senator Lyle Hillyard defended the bill he helped put together, saying it was crafted after many hours of public input and meetings.
