Republican lawmakers in Utah are dropping their plans to offer measures to punish Senator Mitt Romney for what they see as his failure to support President Trump.

Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson announced the decision yesterday.

House members had proposed a measure to censure Romney for his vote to impeach the President, as well as a bill to allow voters to recall a sitting U.S. senator.

A resolution thanking Trump for his work to help Utahns will still move forward in the House and Senate.

Wilson said the backlash that helped create support for the two measures eventually gave way to a more measured discussion of how the censure and recall bills could have a long-term effect.
