St. George man arrested for assault of his grandmother

A St. George man is behind bars, accused of assaulting his 93-year-old grandmother.  Police arrested 45-year-old Cody Calegory last week after he allegedly knocked the woman to the ground and choked her.  She was able to crawl to a neighbor's home to call 911.  Investigators say Calegory was off his medication and suffering from a mental health episode at the time.

Cannabis dispensary to open in Wendover Nevada

Medical marijuana patients in Utah will soon have access to a new recreational cannabis dispensary just across the Nevada state line.  Chief Operating Officer Jon Marshall says Deep Roots Harvest in West Wendover, Nevada is preparing to open its doors, possibly by the end of this week.

Pilot involved in plane crash still in coma

The family of a pilot injured in a plane crash in Roy says he is still unconscious following surgery.  April Wilcock said yesterday that doctors are hoping to slowly wake her brother Bryce Ransom. Ransom reportedly suffered multiple broken bones when he and the student pilot he was teaching crashed Sunday shortly after takeoff from Ogden-Hinckley Airport.  The student pilot received a broken hand and a concussion in the crash, which is still under investigation.

California decision could impact Utah's coal industry

A city in California's Bay Area could impose an ordinance that would ban the handling and storage of coal, impacting Utah's coal industry.  The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Richmond serves as a major export hub to Asia for the Levin-Richmond Terminal.

Humans encountering more black bears in Utah

The number of reported encounters between humans and black bears in Utah have nearly doubled since 2018.  According to the Division of Wildlife Resources, officers have received 53 reports of incidents involving black bears this year, which is up from 27 the year before.

Utah ski season underway

Ski season in Utah is getting underway.  Brighton Resort will begin running two lifts this morning, making it the first resort in the state to officially open for the season.  The lifts will run seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Park City Mountain Resort will open Friday, while Snowbasin plans to open November 27th.

New study on rear seat belted passenger fatalities

More than 800 rear-seat passengers who weren’t wearing seat belts were killed last year in U.S. traffic crashes, and a highway safety group says states aren’t making enough progress in getting people to buckle up. The Governors Highway Safety Association says in a report released Monday that more than 400 of the 803 people who died would have survived if they were belted.
