Governor Gary Herbert may be considering a possible statewide order making face masks mandatory in public.

The governor was asked yesterday about such an order during an event where half-a-million face masks were donated for students to use when they return to in-person classes.

Salt Lake and Summit counties currently have mandatory face mask orders in place and Grand County has asked for permission from the governor to put a similar order in place.

Herbert said he hasn't wanted to put a statewide order in place, feeling that Utahns should voluntarily wear masks to help protect their neighbors.

Herbert has been reluctant to put a statewide order mandating face masks in place.
