A Utah lawmaker is proposing a bill that could allow communities to get together and form their own counties.

House Bill 93 would provide a means for a group of local governments to petition to break away from their current counties and form a new one.

Republican State Representative Kim Coleman says she's talked to several community leaders in Salt Lake County who would like to have that option on the table.

It's been 100 years since a Utah county was split to form two new counties.

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson is critical of the bill.
