Prosecutors have officially filed charges of kidnapping and child abuse against a religious sect leader who had taken the daughters of one of his followers. Authorities arrested Samuel Shaffer late Monday and found his daughters and the daughters of John Coltharp hidden in 50-gallon barrels and a mobile home not fit for living near Lund in Iron County. Authorities had been looking for Coltharp’s children since late last week when he was arrested on kidnapping charges. Authorities say Shaffer left two of the girls in the barrels outside in sub-freezing conditions for more than a day. Coltharp’s two sons were also reportedly found at a compound belonging to Shaffer on Monday. The felony counts against Shaffer were filed in Iron County court yesterday as authorities continue their investigation.
